atak.pro help
This file is the single source of answers. The help page on the site and the support assistant both read it, so they
can never disagree. Written for someone who has never run a server. Plain words, exact screen names.
What atak.pro is
A hosted OpenTAKServer for your team, on a machine that is yours alone, at a name like ridgeline.atak.pro. You add
people by name on your tenant page, each person gets a code, they scan or tap it in their TAK app, and everyone is on
the same map. We run the server, the backups and the certificates. You run your team.
atak.pro is built and run by Gridbase (Intel Strategies LLC, White Settlement, Texas). It is not affiliated with the TAK
Product Center or any government. ATAK, iTAK and WinTAK are made by others; we host the server they connect to.
What it costs
| Plan | Users | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Squad | up to 10 | $29 a month |
| Team | up to 50 | $49 a month |
| Unit | up to 200 | $99 a month |
Add-ons: Voice (an encrypted Mumble voice server on your machine) $10 a month. Video (push drone or body-cam feeds to
your server and watch them in ATAK, fair use 1 TB a month) $15 a month. Texas sales tax is added for Texas customers.
Billed monthly through Stripe. Cancel any time from the billing portal on your account page.
Ordering
- Go to atak.pro. Type a name for your server. It becomes name.atak.pro. Letters, digits and hyphens only.
- Pick a plan size, tick Voice or Video if you want them, enter your email, pick a region near you.
- Continue to payment. Stripe takes the card. We never see card numbers.
- You get two emails: "being built" (with your Advanced console password, keep it) and about ten minutes later "ready", with the link to your tenant page.
Signing in
There is no password. Two ways in:
- Email link. On atak.pro/login, enter the email you ordered with. We send a link. Open it on the device you are using; you are signed in for 30 days. Use this the first time and any time a passkey is not available.
- Passkey. After you are signed in, on your account page add a passkey. Next time, "Sign in with a passkey" uses Face ID, Touch ID or Windows Hello. No email needed.
If the email does not arrive: check spam, wait a minute (we only send one link a minute), and make sure it is the email
you ordered with. If you lost that email address and your recovery codes, we cannot reset your account over the phone,
by chat, or by support ticket. That is on purpose: a server full of your team's positions must not be takeable by a
good story. Reply from the billing email on file and we will verify the card; it takes 72 hours.
Recovery codes
On your account page, generate recovery codes. You get eight. Each works once, in place of an email link or passkey.
Write them down somewhere safe. They are shown one time only.
Connecting a phone (the part people get stuck on)
Three steps, in this order, on the tenant page.
Step 1. Install the app on the phone first. Android: ATAK-CIV from Google Play. iPhone or iPad: iTAK from the App
Store (TAK Aware also works). Windows: WinTAK from tak.gov. Nothing in Step 2 or 3 works until the app is installed.
Step 2. On the tenant page, pick who the phone is for from the User list. If the person is not in the list yet, add
them under Teammates first. Press "Get the connection code". The page asks your server for a code; that takes up to a
minute because the server checks in every 60 seconds.
Step 3. Connect. If you are reading the tenant page on the phone that should connect, tap "Open in ATAK / iTAK". The
app opens and enrolls. If you are reading it on a computer or a different phone, scan the QR code with the TAK app:
ATAK: Settings, Network Preferences, TAK Servers, the QR icon. iTAK: Servers, the plus button, Scan QR.
The code works 5 times for 7 days. Leave "use default SSL certificates" switched on in ATAK. There is nothing to
import. If the app asks for a username and password, use the ones you gave that person.
Nothing happened when I tapped the button
The app is not installed (go back to Step 1), or it is open in the background: close it fully, tap again. On iPhone,
if nothing opens, press "Copy the link instead", open Safari, paste the link in the address bar, press Go, then
choose Open in iTAK or TAK Aware.
ATAK says "connection failed" or shows a red server
Usually one of: the username or password typed wrong (passwords are case sensitive); the code expired (7 days) or was
used 5 times (make a new one); the phone has no internet. The tenant page shows a notice if several devices failed to
connect in the last hour.
I want to connect from Windows (WinTAK) or without a code
Address: your server name, for example ridgeline.atak.pro. Port 8089. Protocol SSL. Choose "enroll for a certificate"
and enter the person's username and password. No truststore is needed; the server uses a publicly trusted certificate.
Teammates
Everyone who should see the map gets their own user. On the tenant page under Teammates, enter a username (first name is
fine) and pick User or Administrator. The password is shown once; send it to the person with their code. Removing a
teammate deletes their user and revokes their certificate, so their phone drops off the map. You cannot remove your
own admin account. Your plan has a user limit; if you go over it nothing is cut off, you see a notice and can upgrade.
Your server's status
The tenant page shows: Active (normal), Being built (first ten minutes), Payment failed (fix the card within 7 days),
Paused (not paid for 7 days; the map stops, your data is kept), Scheduled for deletion (14 days after pausing or
cancelling; export first if you want your data). "Has not checked in for a few minutes" means we lost contact with
your server; it usually recovers on its own and we have been paged.
Billing
Account page, "Open billing portal": update the card, see invoices, cancel. Cancelling keeps the server running to the
end of the paid month, then it is deleted 14 days later unless you export your data. We do not refund partial months.
A chargeback pauses the server immediately.
Backups and export
We back up your server every night: certificates, users, uploaded files, voice settings. Kept 7 days (Squad, Team) or
30 days (Unit). "Export my data" on the tenant page gives you a plain copy of all of it, as a one-hour download link.
The map traffic itself is not stored.
Voice and video
Voice: a Mumble server at your server name, port 64738. Everyone signs in with their server username and password.
Any Mumble app works; ATAK has a Mumble plugin. Video: push a camera or drone feed to your server by RTSP, RTMP or SRT
(the addresses are on your tenant page), then add it in ATAK under Video.
Handing the server to someone else
Tenant page, Ownership: enter their email. They get a link, sign in with that email, accept. The server moves to
their account. Your card keeps paying until they take over billing in their own billing portal. You can cancel a
pending transfer until they accept.
Security and what we never do
Every server is its own machine with its own certificate authority. Connections are encrypted. Backups are encrypted
before they leave your server. We never read your map, chat or video; our control plane sees only health reports. We
do not claim CJIS, SOC 2 or FedRAMP compliance; do not put anything export-controlled, classified or CUI on this
service. We do not reset accounts over support, ever.
Getting help
The assistant on every page answers from this document and can see your server's status when you are signed in. If it
cannot help, it opens a ticket and a person replies by email. We are a small company: best effort, no guaranteed
response time.
